I'm surprised the snow is still there from yesterday. I guess it finally got cold enough to stick. It's hard to believe that the year is almost over. I should probably start on me New Year's resolutions.

I had a reasonably good time at tutoring yesterday. It was strangely satisfying to teach a kid long division: doin' it rite. So many of those kids are way smarter than they think they are, and just aren't either trusting in their own abilities or aren't willing to give things a try. I'm being terrible and skipping lecture for the last time. I'll have to watch both Wednesday and Friday's lectures this weekend. But, I'd rather get rid of the last of this stupid cold. This is what, week three now?

Weekend To-Do List:

Watch Bio Lectures (Wednesday) [x] (Friday) [x]
Bio Reading []
Read Chapters 2-3 in The Tipping Point [x]
Read Chapter 11 in Clinical Psych []
Research Paper for Linda []

Write Short Story [x]

Laundry [x]
Vacuum Room [x]
Clean Room [x]

That's all I can think of at the moment.

All packages are packaged and will be shipped out August 3, Monday. With the exception of talia_speaks's package, which will be hand-delivered the same day.

Notes: The cotton did shrink a bit. So the fabric height is now about 42 inches total, or 21 inches for a half-height cut. The print itself is 8'' tall at the highest point.

Update:: All cuts movin' out on Monday.

18th-Mar-2009 09:26 am - Project JSK v. 1.0

I spent most of my Spring Break in the sewing room, slaving away at my Brother. The first few days, I spent most of my time trying new things with the waistband of my floral skirt. Unfortunately, I later discovered that these were not successful, and the skirt is still unwearable. At least by me. I'll try again next time. I also made two pairs of bloomers, which I grossly underestimated lace needs for. As a result, only one pair has lace. Also something to remedy next time I'm in Indy. But, about 80% of my sewing time was dedicated to making my first JSK.

Cut for folks not interested in my sewing adventuresCollapse )
23rd-Feb-2009 02:29 pm - Favorites (books)

I just picked out a few of my favorites. In no particular order and for no unifying reason:

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard
There was just something about this one. Technically, it's a play, and I've seen it. It's hard to define it. But, I think it was something about the way death was treated, and the way the characters fumbled around trying to make sense out of a very confusing existence. Ros and Guil are kind of special as well. And their relationship is quite unique. I think their dynamic influenced that of Hellebore and Aconitine, my floating duo that doesn't exactly have a home or a continuum, yet. Although, it's looking more and more like they're going to show up in some of Carmine Tarrenborough's travels.

The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw
If any single book influenced me to become who I am, this is it. For instance, my fondness for the less friendly and perhaps more sinister fae creatures started here. I could also relate to this character more so than most other protagonists I'm probably supposed to. After looking back at a plot synopsis, I also realized how much this book has influenced the story I'm currently trying to write, mostly in the supporting characters. Probably something that I'm going to re-read in the summer, or when I find some time back in Indiana.

Kamikaze Girls by Novala Takemoto
Honestly, I don't really care about this book's connection to the Lolita Fashion. Although, that was the reason I first picked it up. I think the friendship between Ichigo and Momoko was one of the most beautiful portrayals of friendship between girls that I've ever seen. Probably because it doesn't start out as a friendship in the beginning and grows, in a way that I can believe, into something very strong. Something a lot like love, and a kind of platonic love that I can understand more readily than romantic love-which I don't have experience with. It certainly helps that both protagonists are quirky and warped in their own ways; those are the types of characters that I love best.

Beloved by Toni Morrison
Honestly, it was rather painful to get through the first few times. Yes, I had to read it between three and four times for junior year, and close to another time senior year for my internal assessment. I definitely love this book more for its concepts and ideas more than the plot. Character concepts, imagery, diction. Without a doubt my favorite in terms of literary appreciation. The subject matter doesn't do much for me at all. But, I always got super-excited for in-class discussion. This was the book that helped me impress two of my favorite English teachers. Pulling a passage from this book gave me very close to a sense of euphoric zen before going into my recorded interview. I knew that I was going to do an amazing job. I used it as an example in almost every single Essay I had to write for IB testing. It's also the book I got the idea for sentient but non-cognitive land and locations from. In a very bizarre way, it also lead to people recommending Lovecraft books to me.

Dead Beat by Jim Butcher
I just love the way Harry Dresden manages to get himself out of such nasty trouble in this book. I devoured this book the first time I read it. And, as a result, I can't remember many of the finer details. It's a good thing that I've been planning on a re-read of all of the Dresden books. I'm not exactly sure why it is that I like the Dresden Files books as much as I do. And I think part of me just likes the idea of zombie-fied dinosaurs.
